Correa reflexa 'Carpenter Rocks'

Carpenter Rocks Australian fuchsia

This Australian evergreen shrub forms a loose mound about 3-4' tall and wide.  It has small, bright green, heart-shaped leaves.  Bright red, tubular flowers are tipped with chartreuse and bloom profusely from fall through spring.  It was first introduced to the nursery trade in the USA in 2002 as part of UCSC Arboretum's Koala Blooms program.

What the name means
The genus Correa honors the Portuguese abbot, philosopher and scientist José Francisco Correia de Serra (1750 - 1823).  Reflexa is from a Latin word meaning turned back abruptly at an angle of more than 90° and refers to the angle at which the leaf-like bracts above the flowers join the stem. 

Natural habitat and range
Correa is a relatively small genus with just eleven species of evergreen shrubs which are all native only to Tasmania and South East Australia.  This selection, Carpenter Rocks, is named for the area where is was found; Carpenter Rocks is a small coastal town in South East Australia.
