Ceanothus gloriosus var. gloriosus 'Heart's Desire'

Heart's desire ceanothus

Heart's Desire ceanothus is an evergreen shrub that grows 6-12" high and 4-5' wide.  It makes a good ground cover, particularly in coastal areas where it's happy in sun or light shade.  Inland, it prefers light shade.

This selection of glory mat ceanothus was made by Phil Van Soelen, co-owner of California Flora Nursery in Fulton.  He found it on a rocky outcropping above Heart's Desire Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County.

Heart's Desire is a really good ground cover shrub, especially in coastal areas where it grows happily in sun or light shade.  In hotter inland areas, it grows best when planted in light shade or an area with just morning sun.

Heart's Desire forms a dense ground cover about 6-12" high and spreads to about 4-5' wide.  It's got glossy, dark green leaves that have small spines on the edges and look like miniature holly leaves.

Like most ceanothus in California, Heart's Desire blooms in spring.  The flower color is a little darker than other Ceanothus gloriosus cultivars.
