The name Tiarella comes from the Greek word meaning "small tiara."

In its native habitat, Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata is found on moist shady banks at less than 2,500 meters in north western California, coastal areas of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas and from Alaska through Montana.
