We specialize in plants that are water-wise and/or provide food or habitat for birds, butterflies and beneficial insects. We take care to ensure that none of our plants are invasive.
The plants we grow are selected for their suitability for the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas of California.
Our mission is:
To grow quality plants using sustainable production methods;
To promote regionally appropriate sustainable landscaping practices,
And to have a hell of a lot of fun while doing it!
The nursery was named for our dog, Java; Gold Rush being the line of golden retrievers she's from. Java has shovels for paws and loves to dig for gophers. At twelve years old and with bad arthritis, her digging days are now more sedate. She's still our main meeter and greeter though!
Gold Rush is also a fitting name for the nursery because many of the plants we grow are from regions that were, or still are, gold producers - California, South Africa and Australia.
Getting plants ready for the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show
One of our main goals is to be careful stewards of the environment. We also want the nursery and our plants to be safe for our workers and customers. Therefore, we use no synthetic pesticides on our plants or in the nursery and try to use only the bare minimum of organic approved pesticides. We don't use any herbicides (weedkillers) at all, synthetic or organic. Instead, all weeds are pulled lovingly by hand!
